Fahim Shamim Khan, a local leader of the Minorities Democratic Party (MDP) in Maharashtra, was arrested by Maharashtra police in connection with the recent violence in Nagpur. His name appeared in an FIR registered at Ganeshpeth Police Station, and he has since been remanded in custody until March 21.
Alleged Role in the Violence
Authorities have identified Khan as the alleged mastermind behind the clashes that erupted in Nagpur on Monday. The violence was triggered by a rumor that a religious text—purportedly a ‘chadar’ with holy inscriptions—had been burnt during protests led by right-wing groups against the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb. Preliminary investigations, supported by video evidence, suggest that Khan’s inflammatory speech directly incited the mob.
Background on Khan
A resident of Yashodhara Nagar, Khan has been a notable figure in the local political scene. He even contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections against BJP’s Nitin Gadkari, securing around 1,400 votes. His political activities and controversial statements have now come under intense scrutiny in light of the recent violence.
Nagpur Violence and Aftermath
The clashes in Nagpur have led to the arrest of 55 people so far. Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singhal confirmed that after the imposition of a curfew, no further incidents have been reported. However, security remains tight, with approximately 2,000 armed personnel—including Quick Response Teams and Riot Control Police—patrolling the area under the guidance of a Deputy Commissioner of Police.
As investigations continue, authorities are thoroughly interrogating Khan and other suspects to piece together the full scope of the events that led to the violent outburst.
