The reason Kate Cassidy abruptly left her boyfriend Liam Payne in Argentina has now been revealed.
Close friends of the waitress have revealed she felt as though she “had to go”. Kate had joined the One Direction star on vacation in Buenos Aires, but left just days before he sadly fell to his death from the third-floor balcony of his hotel.
Liam and Kate, who first met in September 2022 at a bar in Charleston, South Carolina, had been struggling with the singer’s addiction issues. “She had to go,” a friend explained.
They continued, “It was becoming very unhealthy for everyone. She hoped he would follow her back to Miami.” Liam sadly later died at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires at just 31 years old.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Liam died from multiple injuries and both internal and external bleeding after his body was discovered in the hotel’s courtyard. Three individuals have since been charged in relation to his death, while Argentine authorities have dismissed any third-party involvement in his fall.
Kate had reportedly been in talks with close friends about Liam’s addiction struggles, allegedly forcing him to make a tough decision. A source disclosed to the New York Post, “His drug use was causing a lot of drama. So she gave him an ultimatum: her or the drugs. He chose the drugs, so she had no choice but to remove herself from the situation. She thought she was doing tough love.”
Initially, the couple’s stay in Argentina was meant to last just five days. It then stretched out to two weeks, much to Kate’s annoyance.

On social media, Kate shared her frustration, expressing to her followers how much she “hated” being stationary for too long and voicing a keen desire to return to their home in Florida. As the holiday wore on, Kate felt as though she was in what one source described as a “hostage situation”.
In the wake of Liam’s death, Kate took to social media to post a poignant tribute. She told her Instagram followers, “I don’t even know where to begin. My heart is shattered in ways I can’t put into words. I wish you could see the huge impact you’ve had on the world, even as it feels so dark right now.”
