Born in Poland, Ostrowski’s early life was dramatically altered by the shifting borders of history. His hometown now lies within Ukraine—a stark reminder of the tumultuous era when Russian forces occupied these lands. In 1939, to avoid conscription into the Red Army, a young Ostrowski fled southward. However, fate caught up with him; he was soon discovered by the Russians and sentenced to exile. In 1942, after years of wandering, Ostrowski joined other Polish soldiers in Scotland. At just 25 years old, Ostrowski fought valiantly in one of the largest Allied airborne operations of World War II, a battle that, despite its heroism, ultimately ended in defeat as Allied forces were overwhelmed by the might of the Third Reich.
After the war, Ostrowski settled in Canada, where he built a new life, yet he never forgot his roots.
