TMZ has reported that Aubrey Plaza and her late husband, Jeff Baena, had been separated for several months before his death, which was ruled a suicide by the Medical Examiner. According to the ME’s report, Jeff had been living apart from Aubrey since September 2024, when she relocated to New York—a fact confirmed by law enforcement sources.
Jeff was found dead at his Los Angeles-area home on January 3. The discovery was made by his dog walker, who, upon arriving at her usual time, noticed unusually loud music coming from inside. When she unlocked the door, she encountered his lifeless body. Investigators noted that no illicit drugs or alcohol were detected at the scene or in Jeff’s system, and no suicide note was recovered.
Authorities have also revealed that Jeff had spoken with Aubrey the night before his body was found. After the discovery, police contacted Aubrey, who confirmed the couple’s separation. She further mentioned that in October 2024, Jeff made several concerning remarks that led her to request a friend to check on him. Despite these troubling signs, Aubrey noted that Jeff had been attending therapy and had no previous history of suicide attempts.
Jeff was officially pronounced dead at 10:39 AM PT, and his last text message to Aubrey was received at 7:36 AM PT on the same day. The couple, who had married in 2021 in what Aubrey described as a low-key ceremony on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” now face a tragic end to their brief marital union.
